First day of school for elementary, collegiate students is Sept. 5

February 22, 2017

Students in Saskatoon Public Schools will begin the 2017-18 school year immediately following the Labour Day weekend.

The first day of school for all students will be Tuesday, Sept. 5. Elementary students will attend for the morning only on Sept. 5, while high school students will attend for the full day.

The first full day of classes for elementary students is Wednesday, Sept. 6.

The school year calendar includes the following breaks:

  • Winter Break: Last day of classes is Friday, December 22; classes resume Monday, January 8
  • February Break: Last day of classes is Friday, February 16; classes resume Monday, February 26
  • Spring Break: Last day of classes is Thursday, March 29; classes resume Monday, April 9
  • The final day of the 2017-18 school year for students will be June 27, 2018.

Beginning in September, Thursday class schedules will be the same as all other school days. The time previously used by school staff on Thursdays for meetings has been reallocated for full professional development (PD) days. Student instructional time remains the same.

For elementary schools, this will result in two additional PD days at the end of August prior to the start of the school year. For secondary schools, four PD days are being added, two of which will also be used in August before classes begin. All elementary and secondary schools will have PD days scheduled at the same time.

A copy of the 2017-18 school year calendar noting all breaks, statutory holidays and PD days is available for viewing and download at this link.
