French Immersion programs at École Alvin Buckwold

January 13, 2017

EABSfrench_web.jpgÉcole Alvin Buckwold School offers elementary French Immersion for students entering at the kindergarten or Grade 1 level, as well as the Late French Immersion program that begins in Grade 6.

Students generally enter the early immersion program in Kindergarten or Grade 1. Students learn French through songs, repetition, activities and play. French is the primary language of instruction in all subject areas and formal English Language Arts programming begins in Grade 3. This program is designed for students and families who do not speak French at home. Resource support is offered in both English and French programs.

Late French Immersion allows students to begin immersive second language study at a later age. Students enter the program in Grade 6 and will graduate with a bilingual diploma upon completing Grade 12. Students in Grade 6 are fully immersed and learn the foundations of the French language using their established thinking skills. All subject areas are taught in French except for English Language Arts.

In Grade 8, the elementary and Late French Immersion students join together to form one cohesive class. At the end of Grade 8, all students are prepared to move forward with their French language studies at the collegiate level.

École Alvin Buckwold School will expand its Early French Immersion program and Late French Immersion program to Grade 8 for September 2017.
