Centennial student posts perfect score in Canada-wide math competition

January 17, 2017

A Grade 12 student at Centennial Collegiate is one of three students who received top honours in the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge.

Daniel Zhou posted a perfect score on the 12-problem exam, earning gold award standing in the both the best in Canada overall and best in Canada for Grade 12 categories.

Andrew Kim, a Grade 12 student at Walter Murray Collegiate, received honour roll standing as one of the top-nine Grade 12 competitors in Canada.

Although he is still in high school, Zhou has earned several university-level mathematics credits, including his first while studying Advanced Placement statistics as a Grade 8 student. In Grade 9 he completed Advanced Placement calculus and has since completed five senior mathematics courses at the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining the highest mark in each of them with an average of 100 per cent. As a Grade 11 student, Zhou tied for top score in the national Fermat Math Contest and was also one of five national champions in the Euclid Math Contest.

Approximately 50 of the top-scoring COMC students have earned the opportunity to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad for a chance to earn a spot on Math Team Canada that will compete in this summer's International Math Olympiad.

Provincially, Saskatoon Public Schools' students dominated the overall results of the Saskatchewan competition. Zhou and Kim finished first and second, respectively, followed by Yunfei Wen of Walter Murray. Named to the honour roll were Xavier Costermans of Centennial, Arshia Saberi of Evan Hardy Collegiate and Daniel Wei, a Grade 8 student at Greystone Heights School who takes high school math at Evan Hardy.

In grade-level competition, the top placings and honour roll recognition all went to Saskatoon Public Schools' students. Results of the Saskatchewan competition are available on the Canadian Mathematics Challenge website.
