Two students from Evan Hardy Collegiate were among only seven high school students chosen to represent Canada at the 2017 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held May 14-19 in Los Angeles.

Harkirat Bhullar and Melody Song were selected as members of Team Canada-ISEF by Youth Science Canada through a competitive national selection process that began in October and concluded in March 2017. Team members were chosen by a panel of 20 university faculty, industry researchers, educators and Team Canada alumni.

Bhullar was chosen earned the selection with his project "Deep Learning for Autism Diagnosis: Insights into Genomic and Phenotypic Features," while Song's project was "Fabalous Molecular Markers: Preventing Favism by Identifying Faba Bean Mutants."

The pair of Evan Hardy students were the only students from outside of Ontario who were chosen to be a part of the Canadian contingent to the event, which last year attracted more than 1,700 student scientists from 75 countries.

 "We are always amazed by the quality of projects submitted for the Team Canada-ISEF selection process," says Dr. Patrick Whippey, selection committee chair. "The research and development work being done by these high school students is approximately at the master's degree level, which speaks volumes about this country's future in science and technology."
