Lakeridge School award presentationGetting in motion has earned the Lakeridge community the $10,000 grand prize for its playground project. The community competed in the Go Out & Play Challenge, sponsored by Saskatchewan Blue Cross and Saskatchewan in motion.

For 10 days in March the Lakeridge Community Association encouraged students and families to take part in physical activity, then log their active minutes on the challenge website.

The community competed against four others, with the one logging the most active minutes taking the $10,000 prize. The Lakeridge community logged 494,671 physical activity minutes during the competition.

The participation of Lakeridge School was vital to winning the competition, with school staff planning more physical activities for students and encouraging families to log their daily minutes. On the final day of competition, the school conducted its own challenge to have all students walk or run a total of 1,000 kilometres. The students exceeded their goal, reaching 1,281 kilometres.

The $10,000 will go towards replacing the playground at Lakeridge School. The project will be completed in two phases, with the first section of the playground expected to be replaced this summer. Fundraising continues for replacement of the second section next year.
