Teacher, school receive national recognition for student exchange

December 21, 2016

Reibot_web.jpgA youth exchange that helped students develop their second language and introduced them to Saskatchewan's history has resulted in national recognition for École Lakeview School and a former teacher.

Kirsten Riebot, who taught at Lakeview during the 2015-16 school year, was selected as the recipient of the 2016 Experiences Canada History Award for her work in organizing an exchange with students from Quebec through Experiences Canada's Youth Canada Exchanges Program.

Riebot, who now teaches in Calgary, and the students who participated in the exchange were recognized at École Lakeview School on Dec. 19 with representatives from Experiences Canada presenting a $2,500 award to the school. Gov.-Gen. David Johnston officially presented Riebot with the award in late November.

The exchange helped the participants develop their second language skills – French for the Lakeview students and English for their Quebec counterparts – and introduced the Quebec visitors to Saskatchewan's rich and diverse history.

Students visited many of the province's notable historic sites such as the Tunnels of Moose Jaw and the RCMP museum, but they also went on a riverboat tour and visited a rural Fransaskois town. A highlight of the trip was a day spent at Wanuskewin Heritage Park learning about First Nations culture and history and participating in programs and activities such as powwow dancing.

The week-long experience provided all students – both from Saskatoon and Quebec – with a deeper appreciation for the many cultures and heritages that have shaped Saskatchewan and created lifelong connections with each other.
