We also have a community room, food services and a large commons area for students to enjoy. Sixty-eight acres of park space surround our school complete with soccer, softball, and football fields as well as walking and biking trails and an outdoor amphitheatre. The building that is home to Tommy Douglas is joined to Bethlehem Catholic High School by a common corridor through the City of Saskatoon's Shaw Centre which includes a 50 metre pool, 25 metre warm-up pool, diving facility, indoor water park and slides, fitness areas and 160 metre indoor track for walking and jogging. We are delighted to be part of this one-of-a-kind facility, and are thrilled that our students and community have access to all that this facility has to offer.
At Tommy Douglas, we offer programming to meet the needs of many students. We offer a broad-based curricular program that allows students countless choices in electives, including Dance, Digital Photography, and Performing Arts. We also offer honours programs leading to optional Advanced Placement courses in a students Grade 12 year. Functional Living Skills (FLS) offers programming for young adults with special needs. In August 2009 our new Softball Academy began for students who wish to follow their passion for softball through this unique academic program. We are currently planning programs in swimming and diving to take advantage of the great aquatic facility that is attached to our school.
At Tommy Douglas, all students are part of an advisory program (called Tiger Time) that sees each student placed in small mentor groups with a teacher advisor. Each teacher adviser serves as the mentor teacher for these students for the duration of their four years of high school and supports the individual needs of each student in their group. This advisory program ensures that all students gain a sense of belonging and receive the support necessary for academic and personal achievement.
Tommy Douglas Collegiate is a place to belong. We are honoured to have our school named after a great Canadian who acted on his belief that communities are responsible for taking care of one another.
