Message to parents and caregivers from the Director of Education

April 09, 2018

Schools are sharing the following letter with the parents and guardians of Saskatoon Public Schools students in the wake of Friday's bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey club.

Saskatoon Public Schools shares in the profound grief of the families impacted by Friday's tragic accident involving the Humboldt Broncos. The enormity of this accident is hard to comprehend. Given the close-knit nature of our province, we acknowledge that this tragedy will hit close to home for many. As a school division, we feel this loss deeply as our daily focus is on the nurturing and development of children and youth. Our condolences go out to those who have lost loved ones, the Humboldt community, and to the many others that have been affected. To honour the lives lost, flags will be flying at half-mast at all our schools.

Many students and families in our schools may feel impacted by the situation. We know it will be a topic of discussion amongst students and may result in some becoming emotional or having questions. As always, our schools will provide support to students through our compassionate and skillful teachers, counsellors, and support staff.

However, not all questions will be raised at school. We have attached some information that may help you in conversations with your children during this difficult time.

The importance of community cannot be overstated in a time like this. In the coming weeks and months, we will need to continue to support each other as we work through the feelings this event creates. If your child needs further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact your school.

On behalf of Saskatoon Public Schools,
Barry MacDougall, Director of Education
