Last Board meeting of 2024 held December 10

December 17, 2024

The Board of Education's last meeting for 2024 took place on Tuesday, Dec. 10 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Public Board meetings are open to all, with the option to attend in-person or virtually using Microsoft Teams. The livestream links for meetings are posted here.

At the Dec. 10 meeting, attendees heard a presentation on literacy. Saskatoon Public Schools has made significant progress in literacy instruction, assessment, and intervention based on best practices and current research on reading acquisition.

Greystone Heights teacher, Kellie Bell, spoke to her experience embracing the new teaching practices in the area of literacy and then sharing her expertise wider. Ms. Bell has invited brand new Grade 1 teachers at SPS to join a mentorship team. The cohort has become a vehicle for Ms. Bell to share her teaching knowledge around literacy as well as to support teachers starting out in their career.

A former student of Ms. Bell's also attended the Dec. 10 Board meeting along with her family. The student's dad remarked that his daughter seemed to start reading overnight, almost as if by magic.

It turns out the magic is Ms. Bell and our other outstanding teachers who will not rest without doing their best for our youngest learners. We really are so grateful to have the best teachers.

"First you learn to read, then you read to learn."
