Programs offer unique learning for high school students

March 15, 2022

Specialized high school programs that offer unique and hands-on learning experiences are inviting students to explore their opportunities for the 2022-23 school year.

Outdoor School, Media School, and the High School Carpentry Apprenticeship Program (HCAP) provide Grade 11 students (plus Grade 12 for HCAP) with the chance to join other students from collegiates across the city to participate in a semester-long specialized learning experience.

The three programs will hold a joint virtual information night on Wednesday, March 23. Online applications available on the program websites. The application deadline for Media School, Outdoor School, and HCAP is Friday, April 1, 2022.

Grade 11

Outdoor School, located at Walter Murray Collegiate, sees students develop outdoor living skills, critical thinking, and confidence as they participate in major excursions. Students earn five academic credits as they combine learning through integrated research projects with opportunities for back-country camping, canoeing, cycling, wall climbing, snowboarding and more. Email [email protected] or [email protected] for an invitation to the virtual open house and visit www.saskatoonpublicschools.ca/outdoorschool for information.

Media School at Evan Hardy Collegiate is a chance for students to concentrate on media production. The program takes a film- and television-centered approach and course work is fully integrated with activities emphasizing independent work, peer teaching and learning, and group projects. Students will be challenged practically and academically. Email [email protected] for an invitation to the virtual open house and visit www.saskatoonpublicschools.ca/mediaschool for information.

The High School Carpentry Apprenticeship Program at Mount Royal Collegiate is open to students in Grade 11 and Grade 12. It provides a hands-on approach to learning as students develop skills by working with experienced tradespeople on construction projects. Students can gain up to 640 hours towards their apprenticeship through the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Program. Email [email protected] for an invitation to the virtual open house and visit www.saskatoonpublicschools.ca/hcap for information.

Information about Grade 11 programs is available on the respective program websites. Students in Media School, HCAP, and Outdoor School do not have to be enrolled at the host collegiates. Students will attend the program for one semester, and spend the other semester at their home collegiate. The programs are open to current Grade 10 students in Saskatoon Public Schools.

Grade 9

For Grade 9 students, Collective Voice, Off the Grid, and the Waskawīwin-Land-Based Education program provide learning opportunities that integrate Grade 9 curriculum with unique experiences.

Collective Voice is a unique learning experience offered to students enrolled at Aden Bowman Collegiate. This is a half-day, full-year program with an emphasis on learning through collaboration, group work, and community building. Using the themes of Social Studies 9 as a driving force, the program focuses on growing citizens who will help to build a sustainable future.

Off the Grid at Tommy Douglas Collegiate is a half-day, full-year learning experience that will take students on an integrative learning adventure. This program is for students who are interested in topics such as climate change, social justice, and youth empowerment to promote change in Saskatchewan communities. The program connects in-class learning with outdoor expeditions.

The Waskawīwin-Land-Based Education Program at Bedford Road Collegiate sees students take an environmental approach to learning that recognizes the deep connection and relationship of themselves to their place in the world and to the land. Emphasis is placed on using Saskatchewan's diverse landscape and the natural world to enhance student learning and bring the curriculum to life.

Applications are available on the respective program websites. The application deadline for Grade 9 programs is Friday, March 18, 2022.
