Every year at collegiate graduation ceremonies, trustees from the Board of Education hand out three of the top awards – the Governor General's Medal, the Perseverance Award, and the School Board Proficiency Scholarship.
For almost 150 years, the Governor General's Academic Medals have recognized the outstanding scholastic achievements of students in Canada. Regarded as the nation's most prestigious student award, the medal recognizes the student graduating with the highest average from a high school, approved college, or university program.
The Perseverance Award, given by the Board of Education, recognizes a student who has persevered through significant obstacles and was able to succeed despite the challenges faced. The award of $1,000 is to be put towards future endeavors.
With the Proficiency Scholarship, Saskatoon Public Schools recognizes the top student in each grade with a cash award to be held in trust until they graduate. The top student in Grade 12 receives a $1,500 award.
In addition, the Saskatoon Board of Education First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Student Scholarship provides four, $1,500 scholarships for Indigenous students who graduate from our collegiates. The scholarships are the: Academic Achievement Award, John Dewar Spirit and Resiliency Award, First Nation Cultural Youth Award, and Métis Cultural Youth Award. These are presented at the annual Saskatoon Indian and Métis Friendship Centre graduation ceremonies.
