School division reports enrolment increase of almost 600 students

November 12, 2019

Saskatoon Public Schools recorded its 11th consecutive year of enrolment growth with 25,808 students registered in kindergarten to Grade 12, an increase of 599 students from 2018.

As of Sept. 30, there were 17,139 students attending the division's elementary schools and 8,669 attending secondary schools.

Trustees were told during the Nov. 5 Board of Education meeting that 1,924 kindergarten students enrolled this fall, an increase of 72 students over last year. The number of students enrolled in French immersion was 2,793, an increase of 130.

The division has 2,824 students in Grade 1-12 who require English as an additional language support, down slightly from 2018.

Other highlights of the board's regular meeting included:

  • A Wildwood School fundraiser that resulted in 600 pounds of fresh vegetables for the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre was highlighted as the meeting's Celebrating Excellence item. The fundraiser sponsored by the school's parent group asked families if they wished to donate an additional $10 to purchase vegetables for the food bank. It's one way that the school's families, staff and students support others in the community.
  • Trustee Colleen MacPherson was elected as board chair for the 2019-20 academic year during the Board of Education's inaugural meeting. MacPherson replaces Ray Morrison as board chair. Morrison, who chose not to run for the position, had been board chair since 2006.
