October 22, 2020

enrol2020_news.jpgSaskatoon Public Schools reported a decline in division-wide enrolment as of Sept. 30, with the COVID-19 pandemic having a significant effect on overall enrolment, trustees were told during the Oct. 20 meeting of the Board of Education.

The school division's kindergarten to Grade 12 student enrolment is 25,280 as of Sept. 30. This marks an enrolment decrease of 528 students since September 2019.

There were 16,927 elementary students enrolled as of Sept. 30, a decline of about 200 from the previous year. High school enrolment was 8,535, a reduction of approximately 300 students when compared to 2019. There were 1,837 students enrolled in kindergarten, a small decrease of 87 students.

Class sizes were reduced in elementary schools as a result of the temporary redeployment of band teachers and online teachers having embedded prep time in their schedules. In grades 9-12, there are a small number of large class sizes in the first learning term. Administration continues to monitor this situation and will be responsive on reducing large class sizes in the upcoming learning term.

The Celebrating Excellence portion of the board meeting highlighted the role played by Facilities staff in ensuring a safe and successful reopening of schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There were significant contributions by the departments of contract services, maintenance, and operations. Staff collaborated and problem solved various scenarios to ensure renovation projects and school alterations were completed on time. A safe return for students and staff and was the top priority and the hard work of Facilities staff were appreciated by school-based and central office staffs.
