A Grade 8 class from Greystone Heights School is among the regional finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge.
The challenge asks students from Grades 6 through 12 to identify issues in their communities and develop solutions using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The Greystone Heights students are investigating light pollution with a focus on determining a workable product or action to help reduce light pollution in Saskatoon.
For their effort and selection as regional finalists the class received a technology package including a tablet and 360-degree camera to assist in the creation of a three-minute video that illustrates the implementation of their solution in their community.
The class at Greystone Heights and a Science 10 class at Aden Bowman Collegiate are among only five Saskatchewan schools named to the list of regional finalists. Students at Aden Bowman are investigating resilient communities — including approaches to such things as local jobs and reskilling, transportation and the food system — and how to effect change in their neighborhood.
The videos will be reviewed by a panel of judges with winners announced in mid-June. Each of the four regional winners will receive a $20,000 technology package for their school and participate in an event with scientist Natalie Panek, a Forbes 30-Under-30 honoree and member of a Canadian contingent working on the European Space Agency's ExoMars rover.
The goal of the challenge is to spark student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and encourage students to look ahead and use STEM to create innovative solutions for problems facing their communities and country.
