Saskatoon Public Schools is the largest school division in Saskatchewan. It operates 49 elementary, 10 secondary, 2 associate and 1 affiliate school and serves 25 000 students while employing approximately 2 400 staff. Of the 49 schools, 15 are identified as Community Education Action Plan Schools. These schools support students and families who have particular challenges due to life circumstances. Students in these schools receive additional nutrition, health and educational programs.
It is of no surprise to anyone that schools are oftentimes a student's safe place. A place where they can be nourished through nutrition, education and emotional support. COVID-19 has impacted those most vulnerable in our community. Our schools are closed, and these students and their families who rely on additional supports are in great need. Our request to you today focuses on those families identified as requiring extra support and kindness. Community School Coordinators work full time in these schools and have personally called families to identify needs and how to best support them. Through this personal interaction, families have been identified and specifically require food, educational materials, physical activity and hygiene items.
In response to this need, the SPSF is launching a campaign to provide 500-600 families with Cheer Crates in the months of May and June. Cheer Crates will be approximately $100 in value. Items will be donated or purchased and may include a combination of nutritious food, family activities, books, and hygiene items. Our desire is to provide families with a package that is uplifting and refreshing.
