How We Learn
Students in the iGen program learn the Grade 6 curriculum through
inquiry-based learning
and engagement with Elders and staff at Sherbrooke Community Centre.
The iGen classroom is located at Sherbrooke Community Centre, which provides students with the opportunity to
learn outside the classroom
alongside Elders in the art studio, greenhouse, outdoor garden, butterfly room, Carter Centre, cafeteria, chapel and other areas.
Although iGen students spend the majority of their day at Sherbrooke Community Centre, they continue to access connections with other students, programs, experiences and services at École College Park School.
In the iGen classroom, students engage in authentic literacy practices, including daily journaling, receptive listening and viewing, seeking out answers to questions, sharing technology, and improving language and literacy skills.
Students receive regular feedback from their teacher, Elders, staff, volunteers and community members. They have the opportunity to learn from mentors, including resident artists and university students who may be at the centre. Interested students are also invited to build responsibility by caring for animals in the community (e.g., birds, cats, guinea pigs).
The intergenerational classroom experience provides students with a unique opportunity to engage one-on-one with Elders, allowing each generation to share values and support each other.
