What Host Families Provide
Host families are expected to offer a safe, welcoming, and supportive home environment, including:
- Flexible meal options, including full board (three meals per day and snacks),
- Utilities, including internet access and laundry,
- A private bedroom furnished with a bed, desk, chair, lamp, and closet or dresser,
- A patient, caring, and friendly home atmosphere,
- The same care, guidance, and consideration you would hope for a loved one studying abroad.
International students are welcomed as part of the family and included in daily routines and family activities.
Roles & Responsibilities
Host families are responsible for providing a warm and supportive home environment. Saskatoon International Education staff work directly with students at their schools to provide academic support and program oversight. Host families are not responsible for academic supervision or school-related matters.
As one of the program objectives is English acquisition and immersion, it is an expectation that English will be spoken in the home to provide an immersion environment.
Support for Host Families
Our in-house homestay program offers ongoing support, including:
- Host family orientations, training opportunities, and a comprehensive handbook,
- A dedicated Homestay Coordinator available to answer questions and assist with concerns,
- Access to an after-hours emergency phone line for urgent situations.
Compensation
Hosting is a volunteer-based opportunity. Host families receive a monthly stipend intended to help offset costs related to meals and household living expenses while hosting a student.
