Discover French Immersion at Saskatoon Public Schools

March is Mois de la Francophonie, a time to celebrate the French language and Francophone cultures around the world. At Saskatoon Public Schools' French Immersion schools, the month also brings the excitement of Carnaval celebrations—a celebration of French-Canadian culture, winter traditions, and community.

These celebrations are just one example of how students in the French Immersion program at Saskatoon Public Schools learn about language and culture in meaningful ways.

Andrea Hutcheson, French Immersion educational consultant with Saskatoon Public Schools, says the program offers students opportunities that extend well beyond the classroom.

“French Immersion is such a rewarding experience for students,” says Hutcheson. “Not only are they learning another language, but they’re also building cultural connections and gaining skills that benefit them throughout their lives.”

Learning in two languages

Saskatoon Public Schools offers French Immersion at nine elementary schools and four secondary schools across the city.

In the program, students learn subjects such as math, science, and art in French, while also continuing to develop strong English skills through English Language Arts classes.

“Immersion is different from Core French where French is taught as one subject,” explains Hutcheson. “Students are using French throughout the day in many subject areas, which helps them become comfortable communicating and learning in the language.”

Cultural experiences beyond the classroom

Learning a language is also about exploring culture and community.

French Immersion students regularly take part in field trips to French-speaking communities and events, and some classes travel to eastern Canada - often Quebec - where French is widely spoken.

High school students may even have the opportunity to travel internationally, including trips to France in some years.

Schools also invite Francophone performers and artists to share music, storytelling, and other cultural experiences with students.

“It’s always exciting to see how inspired students are when they interact with Francophone performers and cultural events,” says Hutcheson.

Do parents need to speak French?

A common question families ask is whether parents need to speak French themselves to support their child in the program.

The answer is no.

“In fact, many of our most successful students come from families where French isn’t spoken at home,” says Hutcheson.

The curriculum is designed so students can learn the language through instruction at school, while parents can support their child by encouraging them, asking about what they’re learning, and staying engaged with their school community.

“Teachers and school staff are here to help every step of the way,” Hutcheson adds.

Continuing with French Immersion in secondary school

Some students wonder whether they should continue French Immersion into high school. Hutcheson encourages students to stay with the program if they can.

“Learning builds with every grade,” she says. “Continuing French Immersion through Grade 12 can open up many post-secondary and career opportunities. Graduating with a bilingual diploma is a valuable achievement.”

Research also shows that learning in a second language can support students in overall academic achievement.

“Studies have shown that French Immersion students often benefit academically in many subjects, not just language learning,” says Hutcheson.

Interested to learn more or register today?

Hutcheson says she’s always excited to see new students joining the program.

“French Immersion gives students the chance to learn, grow, and experience new cultures,” she says. “If families are interested or have questions, we encourage them to reach out to their school or to Saskatoon Public Schools division office. We’d love to connect and talk about the program.”
