Saskatoon Public Schools students lacing up for Marafun
With race day just around the corner, students at Saskatoon Public Schools are preparing to hit the pavement as part of Marafun — the youth-focused component of the Saskatchewan Marathon.
The annual event, organized alongside the Saskatchewan Marathon, encourages children ages 5 to 13 to build healthy habits, confidence, and a love of running. This year, more than 90 school teams from Saskatoon and communities across Saskatchewan have signed up to participate. Close to 20 of those teams are from Saskatoon Public Schools.
“Marafun is the youth race connected to the Saskatchewan Marathon,” explains Marafun organizer, Jeff Culbert. “Schools complete practice runs throughout the spring and then come together on race day for the big final fun run.”
At Chief Whitecap School, nearly 100 students are taking part this year under the guidance of teacher and coach Trent Johnston, who has supported the program since its early years.
“We practice two to three times a week,” says Johnston. “Every workout is a little different. Sometimes we run based on time, sometimes distance, and we try to make it fun and different every day.”
For Johnston, the appeal of Marafun goes far beyond the finish line.
“It’s a sport that kids can join from Kindergarten or Grade 1,” he says. “It’s low cost, it’s accessible, and it’s something students can continue throughout their lives.”
He also sees the confidence-building benefits firsthand.
“When you work hard and accomplish your goal at the end, the self-esteem and self-confidence that comes along with that is huge,” he continues.
Culbert says the program succeeds because of the commitment of teachers and schools that encourage students every step of the way.
“The program wouldn’t happen without teachers like Trent and the support from schools,” says Culbert. “They’re the ones helping students learn to enjoy running in a fun and encouraging environment.”
The 2026 Saskatchewan Marathon, including the Marafun, takes place Sunday, May 31.
