Applications for Grade 8 Ecoquest and ScienceTrek programs due April 12

February 23, 2017

Two unique programs that give Grade 8 students an opportunity to engage in hand-on learning and out-of-classroom experiences are accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year.

Each year, the ScienceTrek, Ecoquest and programs bring together students from throughout Saskatoon Public Schools' elementary schools to build diverse classroom communities that focus on experience-based learning opportunities. The programs are open to any Saskatoon Public Schools' student who will be in Grade 8 beginning in September 2017, however students must apply to be a part of the programs.

The Ecoquest program is based out of City Park School, but its mobile classroom approach to education allows students to experience everyday adventures while learning in urban and wilderness settings. Learning experiences are based on seasons, student ability and the focus of study. The places visited by students become the teacher, and the experiences and personal relationships form the content. Ecoquest challenges students to strengthen their social and academic skills, and this intensive experience will most benefit students who thrive on actively participating in the world around them. Applications are due April 12.

The ScienceTrek program combines hands-on science opportunities with outdoor pursuits to create an exciting learning environment. Based at Montgomery School, ScienceTrek is a field-based science program created to inspire Grade 8 students to grow academically, socially, personally and culturally. Students make their own trek to attend this program which blends hands-on science activities with outdoor excursions. Students in the program share an interest and passion for science and will have opportunities to work with science professionals and experts within the scientific community. Applications are due April 12.

More information on ScienceTrek and Ecoquest is available on the program websites. Information on these programs and other unique learning opportunities in Saskatoon Public Schools is available in our Unique Programs Handbook.
