Waskawīwin Land-Based Education
About
The Waskawiwin Land-Based Education program at Bedford Road Collegiate engages Grade 9 students and teachers in an environmental approach to learning that recognizes a deep connection to place and to the land. This approach affirms that meaningful learning occurs through cultivating relationships between people, community, and the natural world. Over the course of a semester, students earn credits in physical education, social studies, English, health and career education while developing diverse ways to demonstrate their learning. Through reflection, collaboration, and real-world experience, students build the skills and character necessary to become engaged community leaders.
Students participate in activities such as bike trips, canoeing, walking excursions, and field studies. These experiences allow them to explore areas in and around Saskatoon, deepening their understanding of their role within both their local environment and the broader global community.
Students currently enrolled in Grade 9 may apply to return in Grade 10 to further extend their learning and leadership. In their second year, students earn Leadership 30, Wellness 10, English 10, and Literacy 10 credits within an experiential framework. This Grade 10 pathway is distinct in Saskatoon, offering a continuation of land-based, integrated learning that is not available elsewhere at the senior level.
Students in the program learn together over the school year and receive credits in English language arts and physical, health and career education. Students develop methods to show their learning in a variety of ways and build on their skills to become engaged community leaders. There is a strong emphasis on using Saskatchewan’s diverse landscape and the natural world to enhance student learning and bring the curriculum to life.
Students take part in a variety of activities, which may include daily bike trips, canoeing, walking and field trips. These activities allow students to experience areas in and around Saskatoon that enhance the curriculum and increase student understanding of their place in, and the impact they have on, their immediate surroundings and the global community.
