About

The Saskatoon Public Schools Saskatoon Academically Gifted Education (SAGE) program supports gifted learners in Grades 5–12 by providing a learning environment that challenges, inspires, and nurtures their unique strengths.

Students learn through interdisciplinary experiences that promote creativity, collaboration, innovation, and real-world connections while meeting provincial curriculum outcomes.

Students come together from across the city to attend the SAGE program at Caswell School, Greystone Heights School, Dr. John G. Egnatoff School, Bedford Road Collegiate, or Walter Murray Collegiate. While each student brings their own unique strengths, interests, and experiences, they share a common need for an appropriately challenging educational environment and opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive with peers who understand and inspire them.

SAGE Schools

SAGE congregated classrooms are located at the following schools:

Elementary

In elementary school, student placement is based on the neighbourhood the student lives in.

*Note: Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, a phase-out of the SAGE program at Dr. John G. Egnatoff School will take place over three years. All current SAGE students at Dr. John G. Egnatoff School will continue in the program and remain at the school until they complete Grade 8. The Dr. John G. Egnatoff School referral area will become a part of the Caswell School referral area after this change.

Secondary

  • Bedford Road Collegiate
    • Grades 9 and 10
    • Grade 11, beginning in 2026-27
    • Grade 12, beginning in 2027-28
  • Walter Murray Collegiate

Referral and Application Process

The SAGE program uses a referral and application process to identify students who may benefit from gifted programming.

For students attending Saskatoon Public Schools, the process begins when a classroom teacher identifies a student who demonstrates characteristics of a gifted learner. If the student and family are interested in SAGE, the school completes a referral application.

As part of the application process, students complete a cognitive assessment called Insight at the school, which helps identify gifted learning needs. Applications are reviewed using multiple sources of information, including cognitive assessment results and the teacher referral, to determine whether SAGE is the best fit for the student.

  • Elementary (Grade 4): Referrals take place from February to June for students being considered for entry into the Grade 5 SAGE program.
  • Secondary (Grade 8): Referrals take place from December to March for students being considered for entry into the Grade 9 SAGE program. The application process also includes a student writing sample, and students can indicate their preferred SAGE high school.

Families who are new to Saskatoon Public Schools, or who are interested in SAGE are encouraged to review the FAQs below and/or contact SAGE@spsd.sk.ca to learn more about the application process and eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is transportation provided for SAGE students?

No, transportation is not provided. Families/caregivers provide transportation.

Can students enroll in SAGE after the regular application process or at a later grade level?

Yes. Students may be considered for the SAGE program after the Grade 4 application process if space is available and they meet the program criteria.

Current Saskatoon Public Schools students who have not previously completed cognitive assessment may participate in the Insight assessment during the designated assessment timelines, which occur at the same times as the Grade 4 and Grade 8 screening process. If a student has already completed an eligible cognitive assessment (such as the Insight, WISC, WJ III Cognitive, or CCAT) and the family would like them to be considered for SAGE during the school year, parents or caregivers should contact their child's classroom teacher or school administrator. The school will contact the SAGE coordinator and superintendent to review the assessment results along with other relevant information to determine whether the student may be considered for placement. As with all applications, admission to the SAGE program is based on a comprehensive review of each student's strengths, learning needs, and readiness for the program.

What transition supports are available for students entering SAGE?

Students who are offered a placement in the grade 5 SAGE program are invited to attend SAGE Open House before the end of the school year. This gives students and families an opportunity to meet staff, learn about the program, and become familiar with the classroom. If a student needs additional support with the transition, a personalized transition plan can be developed in collaboration with the family, the student's current school, and SAGE staff to help ensure a successful start.

What if SAGE is not the right fit for my child?
If SAGE is determined not to be the right fit after conversations between a family, teachers, and school administrators, the student can return to their neighbourhood school.
Is French Immersion or other language programming available within SAGE or at the school?

No, French Immersion and other language programming is not available in the SAGE program.

Does SAGE follow the Saskatchewan curriculum?
Yes, SAGE and all programs within Saskatoon Public Schools follow the Saskatchewan curriculum.
How are students selected for the SAGE program?

Students are identified for consideration by their current classroom teacher. If the teacher, student, and family believe that SAGE programming may be a good fit, the classroom teacher completes a referral on the student's behalf.

Referrals are reviewed using multiple sources of information to determine whether a student demonstrates characteristics consistent with the SAGE program. Consideration may include:
  • High cognitive ability, identified through an Insight assessment (completed at grade 4 and grade 8 if currently enrolled with SPS or another recognized cognitive assessment (such as the WISC, WJ III Cognitive, or CCAT), with results in the high to very high range.
  • High academic achievement, demonstrated through consistent classroom performance and teacher observations.
  • Learning characteristics commonly associated with gifted learners, such as advanced reasoning, curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to learn new concepts quickly.
  • Social-emotional readiness, evidence that the student is likely to benefit from a learning environment with intellectual peers. This may include independence, self-regulation, perseverance, and readiness to engage in challenging learning experiences.
  • Interests and engagement, a strong interest in learning and participation in activities that reflect the student's strengths and talents, both in and outside of school. This may include extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, artistic pursuits, STEM activities, athletics, clubs, or community involvement.
  • Selection is based on a comprehensive review of the student's strengths and readiness for the program rather than on any single assessment or criterion.
Can families refer their own children?
No, applications are completed by classroom teachers. Families outside of the division can talk to their current school/classroom teacher about the possibility of applying and reach out to sage@spsd.sk.ca.
If an elementary student in SAGE leaves the program for another Grade 8 special program, do they need to reapply?
No. If a student would like to return to the SAGE program for Grade 9, there is no need to reapply. Simply let their current classroom teacher or school administrator know of their intention to return, and they will support the transition to the Grade 9 SAGE program.
Does graduating as a SAGE student confer a special diploma (similarly to the International Baccalaureate program, for example)?
No, it does not confer a special diploma.
