North Park Wilson’s Art Fest celebrates art, student belonging
The Saskatoon Public Schools Board of Education gathered for its regular monthly meeting on April 14, where trustees heard about the powerful impact of arts education at North Park Wilson School and received several reports and updates on division business.
The meeting began with a presentation about North Park Wilson’s 10th annual Art Fest; a celebration of student creativity that brings together students, staff, families, and the broader community through artistic expression.
Art Fest showcases student talents across a range of disciplines, including visual arts, music, drama, and dance. As a Centre of Excellence Through the Arts, North Park Wilson School has a long-standing commitment to arts-integrated learning that supports both skill development and student voice.
Trustees also heard from a parent of students involved in the school’s arts programming. She shared that North Park Wilson has been a place where her creative children found “their place and their people,” and a school community where they could learn to be themselves.
Agenda highlights
In addition to the Art Fest presentation, the board also received updates on a number of other agenda items, including:
- Annual changes to administrative procedures
- Second-quarter financial results
- Strategic Plan accountability report focused on character and engagement
- Reports from trustees (delivered verbally)
- Board meeting dates for the 2026-27 school year
Reports from trustees
During reports of trustees, board members highlighted many of the meaningful learning opportunities, performances, and events taking place across the division.
Among the highlights mentioned were Centennial’s Coffee House, where student musicians showcased their talents; performances by Lakeview’s Grade 7-8 Jazz Band and Walter Murray’s Combo Band; and Lakeview’s production of Treasure Island.
Trustees also celebrated Alvin Buckwold’s BINGO Night, Lakeridge’s Grade 6 Science Fair, Walter Murray's Multicultural Festival, and Evan Hardy's Collective Souls event, which brought together community members in support of the Restorative Action Program.
Student athletic achievement was also recognized, including Marion Graham's basketball teams and student-athletes who participated in the wrestling championships. Trustees noted their appreciation for the outstanding coaching and staff behind these student achievements.
Trustees expressed gratitude for the many staff members who dedicate time and energy to extracurricular opportunities across the division. It was noted that these experiences - from clubs and teams to performances and special events - are often among the most meaningful and memorable parts of a student’s K-12 journey.
Other highlights included Tommy Douglas' Night of Improv in support of the Skits & Giggles Improv Troupe's national qualification, Westmount’s everyday supports for students, and the inspiring volunteer effort to pack the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation (SPSF) spring break cheer crates.
Trustees also spoke with appreciation about the continued impact of Full Day Every Day Kindergarten (unique to Saskatoon Public Schools in Saskatchewan!) and the strong support it has received from community champions—most notably Wayne Brownlee and the Brownlee Foundation, and SPSF.
