Driver Education is offered at all Saskatoon Public School collegiates during the school year, as well as two collegiates during the summer months. It is part of the Core Curriculum.
Driver Education is a Grade 10 subject but is offered to students who are at least 15 years of age at the start date of the course. During the school year, students may register at Student Services in their collegiate or apply when selecting courses for the next year. Students wishing to attend a two-week Summer School course must register online.
The Driver Education course consists of 30 hours of theory instruction, six hours of simulator instruction, and four hours of in-car instruction. Students are given instruction on the rules of the road, mental and physical components of driving, correct eye usage, defensive driving, driving in adverse conditions, effects of alcohol, drugs, and distractions on the driving task and sharing the road with other vehicles in the city and on the highway.
Early in the course, students will be required to pass the Class 7 Learner's Test and a vision test; at that time, they may purchase their Class 7 Learner's License. In order to obtain this license, students must present their signed health card along with their birth certificate or passport. Due to the limited amount of time in Driver Education, the students will be encouraged to practice as much as possible. Upon successful completion of the course, the instructor will forward the information to SGI so the student's profile can be changed. This information must be on the student's SGI profile in order to take a road test. Students who completed driver education before the 2015-16 school year and have lost their certificate of driver education are able to purchase a duplicate record by calling (306) 683-8268. The cost is $25.
