Paintings share story, artistic legacy of our school's namesake

November 08, 2017

painting1.jpgThe three large-scale paintings in our school's main foyer were painted by Ernest Lindner while he was the art teacher at the former Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute.

It is interesting to note that Mr. Lindner created the paintings at the request of the school's administration to cover some unsightly radiators. Although not intended as finished works of art, the panels demonstrate Lindner's range of interests that extended from pure design and illustration to skillful rendering and on to highly personal and expressive imagery.

painting2.jpgMr. Lindner began teaching at Tech in 1936 and retired 1962 to work as a full-time artist. During his tenure with the public school system he was instrumental in developing Saskatoon into an artistic centre, not only because of the national recognition that his own paintings received, but also because of the success of his many students who would go on to attain national prominence. Ernest Lindner's paintings are represented in most of the principal collections in this country, including the National Gallery of Canada.

Our school is proud to bear the name of painting3.jpgErnest Lindner and honour his contributions to students, public education and the local, provincial and nation art communities by sharing these works. Three panels are located at our school and five more are on public display at the Board of Education office.
