School division supporting families to meet students' nutritional needs

June 09, 2020

The work done by Saskatoon Public Schools and its community partners to ensure the nutritional needs of students and families are being met during school closures was highlighted during the Board of Education's meeting held June 2.

Food security is an issue for many students and families. The school division has been engaged in several initiatives since the closure of schools on March 20 including:

  • Mount Royal Collegiate Food Preparation: The Saskatoon Tribal Council and Saskatoon Public Schools are providing 300 to 800 meals per day for families in need. Cafeteria workers, nutrition workers, community school coordinators, and educational assistants are preparing the meals in the kitchens of Mount Royal Collegiate. A recent donation will allow the program to operate until the end of June.
  • School-Based Nutrition Budgets: Continuing to support vulnerable families through school-based budgets by providing nutritional food items to those who need support. School-based administrators, teachers, and community school coordinators continue to reach out to families.
  • Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation: The foundation initiated the Cheer Crate campaign and assembled more than 500 crates containing food and other items that were delivered to families May 12. Another round of crates will be delivered in mid-June.
  • CHEP Good Food Inc.: As a temporary measure CHEP initially assembled bagged lunches and delivered them to distribution points for community school families to access. CHEP has since shifted to packing food boxes with the delivery of 495 food boxes to 400 families once per week.
