School division to receive increase in operational grant for 2019-20

April 16, 2019

Saskatoon Public Schools will receive a 1.5 per cent increase in provincial education funding, according to information presented during the April 9 Board of Education meeting.

In the wake of the recent provincial budget, trustees heard the school division will receive an operating grant of $229.8 million 2019-20. That is an increase of $3.5 million when compared to 2018-19 but is only 0.7 per cent ($1.57 million) more than what the division received in 2016-17. Since that time the school division has experienced enrolment increases and inflation pressures that exceed the increase in operating funding.

The Board of Education will set the 2019-20 operating budget budget in June.

Other highlights from the meeting included:

  • Students, teachers and parents from Brownell School shared examples of the school's commitment to responding to student needs during the Celebrating Excellence portion of the April 9 Saskatoon Board of Education meeting. Staff and students at Brownell have focused on ways to continuously improve learning in literacy and mathematics and have been very successful. Staff, led by the resource teacher team, have responded to learning assessments with innovative interventions that support student success, with teaching and learning focused on students' growth in core academics.

  • Student Services staff shared the work done by the Learning Disability Team to support students who have been identified with a learning disability. Areas of discussion included: past and current supports, learning disability versus intellectual disability, supports for teachers and students, and the importance of creating smooth transitions from grade to grade.
