Board of Education meeting recognizes bravery of staff, students

December 09, 2021

SFSMoose3.jpgThe quick reaction to keep students safe when a moose crashed into Sylvia Fedoruk School was recognized during the Dec.7 meeting of the Saskatoon Board of Education.

Two staff members of the Boys & Girls Club of Saskatoon ensured students were able to exit the building after the moose burst through a window just before 9 a.m. on Nov. 4. School staff members in a nearby classroom then quickly opened an outside door and brought everyone inside to a safe place. Thanks to the quick thinking and actions of the staff no one was seriously hurt — only one bandage was required.

The story was shared with trustees by school administrators, along with one of the students who was present on that day and his parent.

Other meeting highlights included:

  • The division's Human Resources department reports that as of Sept. 30, 2021, the school division has 1,574.64 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees on regular, replacement, and temporary contracts. That compares to 1,687.53 FTEs the previous year.
  • Trustees were updated on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of Dec. 7, 96 per cent of permanent, temporary, and substitute employees have been verified as fully vaccinated under the division's administrative procedure. As of Dec. 7, the school division had been notified of 319 cases this school year. Only one schools remains in outbreak status. All classrooms that were temporarily providing remote learning have returned to in-class learning.
