Sutherland School
Inspiring Learning
Principal's Greeting

Welcome to Sutherland School!

Our school is located just off Central Avenue in one of Saskatoon's oldest neighbourhoods: Sutherland. The present school, built in 1960, replaced a "Castle" school built in 1912, and an earlier small school house constructed in 1909.  Over the decades, our school has seen generations of families enjoy the rich cultural diversity that still encompasses our student body today!   Our school takes pride in many innovations developed within the areas of Technology, Mathematics, Literacy, Cultural Diversity/Responsiveness, Wellness/Character Education, and Arts Education.
Families enjoy the rich cultural diversity that continues to encompass our student body today. Our school community celebrated its 100th anniversary during the 2012-2013 school year.

Over time, Sutherland School has developed a warm and cozy atmosphere.  Our families can attest to its stability, sense of charm and security.  People say: "Sutherland School is one of Saskatoon Public Schools' best kept secrets."

Our students are engaged learners.  Students are encouraged and supported as they become better decision-makers and reflective thinkers.  Assessment for Learning practices are directed and guided within our students' learning.  We are proud of our students' commitment to learning!

Sutherland School offers wonderful, innovative programming, including our Pre-Kindergarten Program offered in the mornings and afternoons.  Our Literacy programs are second to none - i.e., Just Read, Levelled Literacy Intervention, Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) strategies, and Language Arts Inquiry strategies.  We offer technological learning in areas like computer programming and afford students the opportunity to use electronic white boards both in our regular programming and in special education/resource- based learning.  We believe in cultural belonging and multicultural learning and offer programming in inclusive education . Our extracurricular programming is superb, with high student participation in sports such as Track, Cross-Country Running, Floor Hockey, Basketball, and Volleyball.  In the Spring of 2017 we started a traditional drumming group which meets weekly for practices on Tuesday noon hours.

At Sutherland School, we are committed to providing a safe, positive learning environment for our students. Our motto -- "Working Hard To Be Our Best!" -- suggests an important element of education. It reflects the effort we encourage each student to put into his or her learning.  We take pride in working hard to motivate each student to do his or her best.  Our staff is also dedicated to doing their best.  Working together, students, parents and school staff strive to ensure that each individual student has the opportunity to develop to their full potential. We work closely with our parents and community members and develop plans with the School Community Council as cohesively as possible.  We believe parents are our partners!

Our goal is to connect with all students in a deep, meaningful way.  This translates into a strong sense of inclusiveness and engagement with our staff and students.  There is no better place to learn than in a school that provides a family atmosphere.  Our Sutherland Sabres' belief statement says it all!: "We believe that to empower students they need organized, knowledgeable instruction in a safe, compassionate environment."

We are proud to work with such innovative, collaborative, caring and hard-working staff.   Every effort and plan implemented to increase student learning, and engage our students in their learning journey, is represented in our school with a strong sense of commitment.

We are proud of our students and their families.  They promote a great sense of genuine care and enthusiastic school spirit, and generate a buzz in our school classrooms, halls and school yard on any given day!   A few minutes spent in our school will prove that everyone is valued and diversity is celebrated.

Our school's environment is warm and welcoming. Students, staff and parents consistently demonstrate goodwill, and work together to create a positive learning experience for all. Our school's cheerful welcome and inviting atmosphere will leave a lasting first impression.
Our students never cease to amaze us and make us proud. They continue to demonstrate improvement in academic, social and personal skills throughout their time at Sutherland School.
