Looking to reconnect with language and culture?

Saskatoon Public Schools' PreK–8 Cree Program – nêhiyâwiwin or "being Cree" – is exclusively offered at wâhkôhtowin School. The program includes the provincial curriculum, conversational Cree, and cultural learning. It's open to PreK–8 students residing anywhere in Saskatoon. 

The program incorporates a bilingual learning strategy that includes English and conversational Cree in the "Y" dialect. This takes place inside a culturally-rich classroom environment as well as outside the classroom. Cultural activities are an important part of the program and include attending feasts, smudges and powwows, learning appropriate protocol with Elders, and traveling to events to listen to stories or learn traditional games with the assistance of a Traditional Knowledge Keeper and cultural teacher. 

The program has been recognized as a Successful Practice by Indspire—a national charity that invests in Indigenous education. A “Successful Practice” designation from Indspire means that Indspire has reviewed the program content and delivery and recognizes it as an approach that has demonstrated success in Indigenous elementary education.

The nêhiyâwiwin Cree Language and Culture program is a joint project sponsored by a partnership between Saskatoon Public Schools, the Saskatoon Tribal Council, and the Central Urban Métis Federation Incorporated (CUMFI).

Program Highlights

• A bicultural/bilingual Cree program offered from Prekindergarten to Grade 8, including a Full-Day, Every Day Kindergarten option.
• Emphasis on land-based learning experiences and leadership in the middle years.
