Good Food Lab
Good food fuels learning
Students learn best when they are nourished. The Good Food Lab provides nutritious, student-focused food programming that supports learning, well-being, and engagement at Saskatoon Public Schools.
By helping create equitable access to healthy food and positive food experiences, the Good Food Lab is making nutritious food an important part of the school day.
More than a meal
The Good Food Lab brings together nutrition, education, innovation, and student voice to create meaningful food experiences in schools.
Through the program, students have opportunities to enjoy nutritious food, build positive relationships with food, and be part of a school culture where nourishment and well-being support learning and success.
Food that supports students
The Good Food Lab is built around a simple idea: when students have access to nutritious food, they are better supported to learn, participate and thrive at school.
The program supports Saskatoon Public Schools' commitment to:
- improving equitable access to nutritious food;
- supporting student learning and well-being;
- creating positive food experiences;
- listening to and incorporating student voice; and
- fostering belonging, engagement and success at school.
The Good Food Lab experience
Good Food Lab programming is designed with students at the centre. By combining nutritious food with opportunities for learning, participation and innovation, the program is helping reimagine what school food can look like.
The result is an approach to food in schools that isn't only about what's on the plate — it's about creating experiences that help students feel nourished, included and ready to learn.
What's happening at the Good Food Lab
Throughout the school year, we'll share stories from Good Food Lab schools, introduce the people behind the program and highlight the experiences of students and staff.

As well, there are pilot projects underway at Chief Whitecap School, Walter Murray Collegiate, and Centennial Collegiate. Chief Whitecap is piloting a breakfast cart for 50-100 students daily, and Walter Murray and Centennial are piloting a universal sandwich program for about 100 daily.
What food is provided?
The 10 elementary schools with full programming listed above have universal snack and lunch programs which prioritize whole, local ingredients wherever possible. We estimate delivering about 1,800 lunches and about 2,700 snacks each day.
How is the food prepared?
Full programming schools receive ingredients and prepared meal components from production kitchen and warehouse. Food is assembled, heated, and/or "finished" at the school level, based on the facility and equipment available. Pilot project schools select options from our menu. They then receive ingredients, recipes, and resources to prepare them. Food is prepared by students and teachers at the school level.
How is the food distributed?
All deliveries between the warehouse, production kitchen and schools are handled by CHEP Good Food Inc.
Who makes up the Good Food Lab team?
The Good Food Lab team consists of an administrative team and staff spread across the production kitchen, warehouse, and participating schools. In total, there are about 20 people on the team.
