Our School
Westmount School is a prekindergarten to Grade 8 school with a proud history and close-knit school culture. Individualized academic support, after-school programs, extracurricular activities, and regular celebrations make the Westmount experience unmatched. We invite parents and caregivers to partner with staff for student success.
A History of Excellence
The historical significance of Westmount School, established in 1913, is not lost on our students or community. Come walk our century-old hardwood floors and you will immediately feel connected to the warm atmosphere that Westmount has built over the decades. The spirit of community at Westmount is evident in the laughter and hugs we receive daily from our students and the words of thanks and appreciation our families share.
Cultural Connections
We weave Métis and First Nations cultures into the fabric of our school every day with our Métis Cultural Program and Let's Lead – Nīkānētān. We proudly offer Michif kindergarten and Michif prekindergarten where students learn the language in a culturally vibrant classroom.
Learning is focused around four priorities:
- Enriching learning in multiple subjects with a Métis/Michif perspective.
- Building culturally relevant leadership skills.
- Transferring knowledge between generations.
- Participating in experiential learning opportunities.
Our program emphasizes intergenerational relationships, respect, and leadership. Students benefit from the teachings of Michif elders in addition to their classroom teachers. Starting in kindergarten, our students take responsibility as role models for prekindergarten students. This model develops leadership skills, a sense of responsibility, and positive connections in our community.
Let’s Lead – Nīkānētān is a full school year program for Grade 8 students who want to spend their year learning the curriculum through practical out-of-school experiences such as camping and outdoor exploration. It is for young people who are looking to develop their leadership skills, find their passion, spend time connecting to the land and experience a hands-on approach to education. Students learn with a holistic and community-based approach that teaches them independence, initiative and advocacy.
Partnerships
The Kinsmen Hockey League is a longstanding and coveted tradition at Westmount. The support of our mentor company SaskTel is evident in our digital technology, and the sounds of music come to us from the dedicated volunteers of the Heart of the City piano program.
