At the May 13 regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, we heard from the staff at John Dolan School about the recent installation of a universally accessible library at their school. John Dolan supports students ages 5 to 21 with multiple disabilities.
The library was funded by a book drive led by our SPS Speech Language Pathologists and through the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation Power Up Project (an initiative to test innovative ideas that address challenges in the classroom). The library provides reading materials in specialized formats to meet the needs of differently abled learners.
Principal Darlene Schultz, VP Kyla McKay and Junior Achievers teacher Rachelle Zentner described the new library as a “vibrant hub of activity”. They also shared testimonials from parents who said the library allowed them to gain a better understanding of their child’s interests. Previously, many school families only had access to a very limited number of special reading materials.
Other topics that were on the board's meeting agenda included:
- Three-Year Preventative Maintenance and Renewal Plan
- Strategic Plan Accountability Report: Student Transportation
- Strategic Plan Accountability Report: Well-Being and Relationships
