Schools welcome back students during the week of Sept. 8-11

June 29, 2020

backtoschool_news.jpgSaskatoon Public Schools will begin the 2020-21 school year on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020, a week later than originally planned.

The first day of school was  scheduled for Sept. 1, however the provincial government has announced the start of the school year will be delayed until Sept. 8 throughout the province.

Throughout the summer, school division staff will be collaborating on plans for how to make schools as safe as possible for the return of students.

The school division has created a Parent and Caregiver Reopening Handbook to provide families with information ahead of the school start date. Prior to the start of classes, families will receive school-specific from the school their child(ren) attend about any new guidelines and procedures that will be in place at that school.

All schools have also created a school-specific reopening plan with information, guidelines and procedures for their school. The school reopening plans have been sent to all registered families and are available on each school's website.

As part of the school reopening plan, Sept. 8-11 have been designated as transition days. All Grade 1-8 students will attend two full days during the first week, while prekindergarten and kindergarten students will attend one half day. Families will receive communication from their schools with specific information regarding their students’ staggered start times and dates.

Collegiate students will also attend on a staggered start basis in order to familiarize students with changes to to their school and schedule. Information is available in the individual school reopening plans.

Online learning delivered by Saskatoon Public Schools teachers will be available for kindergarten to Grade 12 students during the 2020-21 school year.

The elementary online program for kindergarten to Grade 8 will offer full-time curriculum options in a fully online method. Students will use Google Classroom and additional technology tools to facilitate learning. Online programming will be provided through both synchronous (teacher online with the students at the same time) and asynchronous (students access course content on their own at any time) delivery models. For kindergarten to Grade 8 registration, families are asked to complete the full-time registration form and to let their local school principal know of their intent to register with the OLC virtual school.

For Grade 9-12 registration, students may, with the support parents/guardians, register for online learning on a part-time or full-time basis. Please inform Student Services at your home collegiate of your intent to register with the OLC virtual school. Students may choose to make an appointment with their collegiate counsellor to discuss their graduation plan prior to registering.  To make an appointment, contact your collegiate. Collegiate counsellors return to schools Aug. 19.

Students and families who are new to Canada or are not Canadian citizens should contact the Newcomer Student Centre to register for school. The centre offers registration and language assessments by appointment only for those families who wish to register students for the 2020-21 year. Please call 306-683-8400 or email for an appointment.
