Explore Grade 11 Unique Programs at Saskatoon Public Schools

We recently visited Walter Murray Collegiate to spotlight an exciting opportunity for Grade 10 students: our Grade 11 Unique Programs.

Joining us were Mitch Lowe (teacher) and Suraya (student) to share how these programs offer something a little different - and incredibly impactful - for high school learners.

What are Unique Programs?

At Saskatoon Public Schools, Unique Programs give students the opportunity to earn their high school credits through hands-on, experiential learning.

For Grade 11 students, there are four division-wide programs. Each one brings together a small, tight-knit group of students who share similar interests. Instead of a traditional classroom model, students learn through the lens of a specific passion: whether that’s the outdoors, media production, skilled trades, or Indigenous leadership and cultural connection.

These programs are designed for students who:

  • Are passionate about a particular area of interest
  • Enjoy learning by doing
  • Are willing to challenge themselves
  • Are seeking a more immersive, experiential school day

Overview of the Grade 11 Unique Programs

Here’s a closer look at what’s available:

  • Outdoor School: Coordinated at Walter Murray Collegiate, Outdoor School helps students build the skills to confidently explore and understand the natural world. Students learn camping, cycling, snowshoeing, and environmental stewardship, gaining firsthand experience in Saskatchewan’s outdoors while developing teamwork and leadership skills.

  • Media School: Hosted at Evan Hardy Collegiate, Media School is ideal for students interested in film and media production. From filming and editing to costuming and makeup, students experience every stage of moviemaking. They also have access to professional-level equipment, helping them build practical skills for future creative careers.

  • HCAP (High School Carpentry Apprenticeship Program): At Mount Royal Collegiate, HCAP offers students hands-on experience in the skilled trades. Participants work alongside professional tradespeople to build a home right on school grounds — an incredible opportunity to gain real-world experience and get a head start on an apprenticeship pathway.

  • MAGPIE (Manifest Academic Growth and Promote Indigenous Excellence): Located at Nutana Collegiate, MAGPIE connects students to Indigenous cultural practices while fostering leadership and teamwork. Students engage in art forms, land stewardship, ceremony, and traditional knowledge, with an emphasis on relationships, respect, and community connection.

Is a Unique Program right for me?

Each program has its own application requirements, but the most important ingredient is genuine interest. Students don’t need to be experts; rather, they need curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to grow.

Educators look for students who are independent, motivated, and excited about learning in a way that goes beyond the traditional classroom setting.
