Highlights from February 10, 2026 board meeting
The Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on February 10, 2026, beginning with a presentation that celebrated the power of early learning.
Buena Vista School recognized as model early learning site
Prekindergarten teacher Ms. Laura from Buena Vista School shared how meaningful, play-based learning experiences are shaping the foundation for students ages three and four.
Recently identified by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education as a model site for early learning programming, Buena Vista School was recognized for its strong classroom routines and thoughtful support of students’ social, emotional, and developmental growth.
Through intentional, play-based experiences, students learn:
- That mistakes are part of the learning process
- How to express and manage their emotions
- The importance of treating others with respect and care
- How to look after their own space and community
A parent also shared her family’s experience, describing how her children developed confidence, built strong peer relationships, and learned to navigate the structure of a school day during their time in PreK. Watching them graduate and enter kindergarten "prepared and ready to learn" was a proud milestone.
The Board expressed its appreciation for the incredible early learning happening at Buena Vista School and the lasting impact it has on children and families.
Name approved for city centre school: misewī-kīsik | One Sky
The Board also received a report on the naming of the new city centre elementary school and subsequently formally approved the name misiwe-kisik | One Sky.
misiwe-kisik (mis-ih-wee kee-sik) is a Cree phrase meaning “under one big sky”. Paired with One Sky, the name reflects connection, belonging and relationship across the King George, Pleasant Hill, and Riversdale communities, while honouring Indigenous language, culture, and ways of knowing.
The name was shaped through a thoughtful, multi-year process grounded in community voice, student learning, and guidance from the Cultural Guidance Advisory Committee, the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Unit, and Traditional Knowledge Keepers. The Board thanked the many students, families, staff, and community partners who helped bring the name forward.
Set to open in 2027 on the former Princess Alexandra School site, the new school will welcome up to 400 students and include 74 childcare spaces, creating a shared place for learning, care and community.
To honour and celebrate the unveiling, renowned Cree singer-songwriter, actor, and storyteller Joseph Naytowhow shared the song “All One People” with members of the Board of Education.
