Explore your passions through Grade 9 Unique Programs
Choosing a high school path is a big step — and for many Grade 8 students, it’s the first time they play an active role in deciding where and how they want to learn.
Saskatoon Public Schools offers four Grade 9 Unique Programs designed for students who want to learn differently, dive deeper into their interests, and connect learning to the real world.
“These programs give students the opportunity to experience a totally different type of classroom for a year — one that aligns with their interests and talents,” says teacher Aron Knudsen from Bedford Road Collegiate.
Across the city, students can choose from four distinct unique programs.
1. Waskawīwin Land-Based Education
Bedford Road Collegiate
Students learn through connection to the land, culture, and community. The natural world becomes the classroom — whether studying ecosystems, storytelling, leadership, or identity.
Waskawīwin focuses on:
- Experiential outdoor learning
- Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing
- Community leadership and responsibility
- Demonstrating learning in many different ways
“The landscape helps bring curriculum to life,” Mr. Knudsen says. “Students see learning everywhere — not just in a classroom.”
2. Collective Voice
Aden Bowman Collegiate
In Collective Voice, students learn through teamwork, discussion and storytelling. They collaborate on projects and share their ideas with the wider community — including through a partnership with Saskatoon community radio station CFCR.
Students build:
- Communication and collaboration skills
- Media literacy and broadcasting experience
- Confidence sharing ideas publicly
- Strong classroom community connections
3. Full STEaM Ahead
Marion M. Graham Collegiate
STEaM is Science. Technology. Engineering. and. Mathematics. It's a program designed for curious problem-solvers.
Students explore:
- 3D printing and design
- Coding and circuitry
- CAD and prototyping
- Real-world problem solving
It’s ideal for students considering future careers in engineering, technology or innovation fields — or anyone who loves figuring out how things work.
4. Off the Grid
Tommy Douglas Collegiate
Off the Grid is for students who ask big questions — and want to act on them.
Students collaborate with community partners to explore how change happens through policy, activism and cooperation. All while learning outdoors and in the community.
The program emphasizes:
- Environmental and social responsibility
- Outdoor experiential learning
- Civic engagement and advocacy
- Community partnerships
A different kind of Grade 9 experience
Students who participate in unique programs often say the biggest difference is belonging — finding a place where learning feels meaningful and connected to who they are.
Each program still covers the required Grade 9 curriculum, but through hands-on projects, collaboration, and real-world experiences.
How to apply
The application deadline for all Grade 9 unique programs is February 27. Late applications may be considered, but space is limited.
