Morrison elected to another term as Board of Education chair

October 30, 2017

Morrison_news.jpgTrustee Ray Morrison was elected to another one-year term as chair during the Saskatoon Board of Education's inaugural meeting held Oct. 24.

Morrison noted the board's work addressing the challenges of the previous year, the school division's continued enrolment growth and the opening of four new elementary schools.

"I am looking forward to continuing on as chair for another year and I am excited to work with the board," he said. "It should be a priority among all of us to try and keep focused on what is important, which is what happens with students in the classroom."

Trustee Donna Banks will serve as vice-chair for the initial six-month period with Trustee Holly Kelleher filling the role for the remaining six months.

Highlights from the board's Oct. 24 regular meeting included:

  • Teachers and students from Walter Murray Collegiate and Willowgrove School shared their involvement in cross-country running programs at their respective schools during the Celebrating Excellence portion of the meeting. Walter Murray won its 12th city high school title in 13 years and its first provincial title this fall. Willowgrove saw 80 students in Grade 4-8 take part in practices and meets. Cross country is one of the many extra-curricular programs that provide student-athletes in Saskatoon Public Schools with opportunities to train and compete.
  • The board heard that kindergarten to Grade 12 enrolment as of Sept. 30, 2017, stood at 24,891 students, an increase of 546 students from 2016. Kindergarten enrolment was 1,906 students, up 116 students from the previous year. The number of students enrolled in the French immersion program increased by 135 to a total of 2,516. Students requiring English as an additional language support was reported as 2,733, a slight increase from 2016.
