Student Action for a Sustainable Future
Page Content
The Student Action for a Sustainable Future (SASF) project provides inquiry-based learning educational opportunities for students with an action-focus on sustainability. This program provides support, resources and professional development to support teachers while delivering Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) principles both inside and outside of the classroom.
The SASF partners include Saskatoon Public Schools, City of Saskatoon’s Environmental and Corporate
Initiatives Division, Saskatoon Light & Power, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, the Saskatchewan
Environmental Society, and the Sustainability Education Research Institute (University of Saskatchewan).
The five classrooms from Saskatoon Public Schools are engaged in different types of sustainability projects. Each classroom has devised their project to reflect grade appropriate curriculum outcomes with students’ interest at the heart of the work. Michelle Pantel, education consultant - instruction highlighted the partnership. Jeremy Van Olst, Grade 8 teacher at Ecole Alvin Buckwold School, Janelle Will, Grade 8 teacher at Brownell School, and a student from Brownell School shared insight into what their classrooms have been focusing on for their projects.
