June 17 board meeting highlights King George Round Dance, reflects on 2024-25 school year

June 18, 2025

At the June 17 regular meeting of the Board of Education - the final one for the 2024-25 school year - we had the opportunity to hear from staff and students from King George Community School, who shared about the Community Round Dance & Feast they held this year.

Participants said the Round Dance created a sense of belonging, connection with identity and served to deepen their relationships with the greater community. Ward 2 Trustee, Vernon J. Linklater, said: "I appreciate the young people stepping up to do ceremony. Identity is important. Stay who you are; be proud of who you are."

As this was the final board meeting of the school year, Board Chair Kim Stranden took the opportunity to reflect on the school year coming to a close. Some of the areas she spoke to included: awards and special recognitions; reconciliation efforts; support and inclusion; hellos and goodbyes; the arts and sport; and the city centre school project.
