The Montessori kindergarten program, known as Casa, will be the first to be offered in a Saskatchewan school division when it opens at Lakeridge in the fall. Saskatoon Public Schools also offers a Grade 1-8 Montessori program at City Park School.
"Since opening in September 2016, the Montessori program at City Park has grown steadily. This program was very well-received by families, with strong interest and word-of-mouth resulting in a wait list for it. By opening a second program at Lakeridge, and starting the first Casa kindergarten program, our school division is responding to our community and offering diverse learning opportunities to meet the needs of all students," said Superintendent Colleen Norris.
In the program, Montessori philosophy and methodology is used to deliver Saskatchewan curricula. Based on the educational ideals of Maria Montessori of following the child, learning is individualized and presented to match the stages of development of children. Casa comes from Maria Montessori's program for early childhood "the casa dei bambini" or "the children's house." The Casa program takes place in a warm setting scaled to and prepared entirely for children.
Teachers in the program have the specialized training required for leading a Montessori program. There is no tuition for students to attend the Montessori programs in the division. Both the City Park and Lakeridge programs are open to students within Saskatoon.
